Can you combine heat pump rebates? What the Ontario program allows, and what's still unknown federally

Home Renovation Savings lets you add some outside funding, but not other Enbridge Gas, Save on Energy or Ontario incentives. Here are the official rules on stacking and repeat claims, and what the federal rebate has not said yet.

With a federal heat pump rebate on the way, a common question is whether you can get more than one rebate for the same heat pump. Here is what the official pages say today, and where the answer is not published yet.

The Ontario program: Home Renovation Savings

Home Renovation Savings is the program open now. It is brought to you by Enbridge Gas and Save on Energy. Its help page answers the stacking question directly.

  • You can stack incentives from other funding organizations, with some limitations.
  • You cannot stack it with other incentives offered by Enbridge Gas, Save on Energy or the Government of Ontario.
  • Incentives from other funding sources must not add up to more than 100% of the cost to supply and install the heat pump.

Rebates you already received

The program calls this "past participation". It means a rebate was already received, or is expected, for a home upgrade through an Enbridge Gas or Save on Energy program.

You can still apply. But you cannot get another rebate for the same upgrade. New upgrades that never received an incentive can still qualify.

One related rule: replacing an old heat pump is not eligible.

More than one home, or moving

  • You can apply for each home you own, as long as each application meets all the eligibility rules.
  • You can apply again if you move.
  • Both primary and non-primary homes, such as cottages, are eligible.

The federal National Heat Pump Rebate

The federal government has said households can be eligible for a grant of $2,000, or up to $10,000 for low- to median-income households. It says an online portal will open in early 2027, and that the retroactivity period starts on November 1, 2026.

Full details, including rebate amounts, eligibility rules, eligible heat pumps and how to apply, are to be published as of November 1, 2026. Until then, the rules are not decided in public.

The federal pages we read today do not say whether the federal rebate can be combined with Home Renovation Savings. The Ontario stacking rule names Enbridge Gas, Save on Energy and the Government of Ontario. How the two programs will work together has not been published.

What this means in practice

If you are planning a heat pump now, the Ontario rules are the ones that are published. Pre-approval is mandatory, and anything installed before approval is not eligible.

When you are ready, you can check your rebate and ask for a free quote. There is no obligation.
