Heat pump rebate scams: how to spot them, in the official program's words

Home Renovation Savings warns about fake websites, door-to-door sellers and people posing as participating contractors. Here is what the program says to watch for, and how to check who you are dealing with.

A heat pump rebate can be worth thousands of dollars, so it is easy bait. Home Renovation Savings, the Ontario program brought to you by Enbridge Gas and Save on Energy, warns about scammers who create fake websites, promote unauthorized rebate offers and pretend to be participating contractors. Here is what the program's own scam page says, in plain words.

Who the program works with

To get a heat pump rebate, you must work with a participating contractor. The program says these contractors will never contact you first. You reach out to them to start the process.

You can check a contractor two ways: fill in the program's online form to get a list of participating contractors, or search the Participating HVAC Contractor List. If you are still not sure, email info@homerenovationsavings.ca or call 1-866-449-8510.

The program also says Save on Energy and Enbridge Gas do not solicit residential customers over the phone or door to door.

Six tactics the program warns about

  • Fake ads and websites. These copy program names, logos and branding. Type HomeRenovationSavings.ca into your browser yourself. Don't rely on ads or links.
  • Pretending to be part of the program. Some people claim to be participating contractors when they are not. Check them against the official list.
  • Door-to-door sales. Someone shows up claiming to represent Enbridge Gas, Save on Energy or the program. Approved contractors will never show up at your door without an appointment, and they will not offer loans or payment plans.
  • Rebate offers that don't match. The program says its website will always show current, accurate rebate amounts. If an offer differs, compare it there.
  • Pressure to sign on the spot. Take your time. You can tell the person you need to verify the details and their credentials against the program website first.
  • Requests for personal information. Never give your social insurance number, account number, banking or credit card information to someone you don't know.

A note on the federal rebate

The federal National Heat Pump Rebate is a separate program. Its official page says it will be available through an online portal in early 2027, and that more details, including eligible heat pumps, will be available as of November 1, 2026. You can sign up for updates on the official Government of Canada page.

If you think you have been targeted

Report it to the program at info@homerenovationsavings.ca or 1-866-449-8510. The program also points to the Canadian Anti-Fraud Centre to report fraud and scams, and to your local police service.
