Federal heat pump rebate rules are out: $2,000 or up to $10,000, for installs from November 1, 2026

Canada.ca has published the National Heat Pump Rebate details. Installs from November 1, 2026 can count, applications open online in early 2027, and the amount depends on household income.

The federal government has published the details of the National Heat Pump Rebate on Canada.ca. Here is what the official page says today.

How much

  • $2,000 for households above the median income.
  • Up to $10,000 for households at or below the median income.

The page says the actual amount depends on household income and the cost of the equipment installed.

The Ontario income limits

To get the higher amount, your after-tax household income must be at or below the limit for your household size. For Ontario, in 2025 dollars:

  • 1 person: $46,981
  • 2 people: $92,884
  • 3 people: $119,850
  • 4 people: $146,217
  • 5 or more: $158,202

To work out your income, the page says to use your 2025 tax return: line 23600 (net income) minus line 43500 (total taxes payable). If you have a spouse or common-law partner, add theirs too. To apply for the higher amount, you provide your Social Insurance Number so the Canada Revenue Agency can check it.

Who can apply

  • You live in Canada and own the home. It does not need to be your primary residence.
  • The heat pump is on the federal eligible product list, identified by its AHRI number.
  • It was bought from and installed by an HVAC contractor.
  • One rebate per household, even if you own more than one property, and no earlier federal heat pump funding at that address.
  • Homes heated with electricity, natural gas, oil, propane, diesel, coal or wood can qualify. You do not need to remove your old system or show that it broke down, and no energy audit is needed.

When

  • Installs from November 1, 2026 can count. Eligibility is judged by the rules in place on the day of your installation.
  • Applications open through an online portal in early 2027.
  • No money is paid until the program launches and your application is approved.

Keep your paperwork

You must submit your receipts within 6 months. The receipt from your contractor needs to show, among other things, your name and address, the installing company, and the make, model and AHRI number of the equipment, plus the total project cost.

What about the Ontario rebate?

Home Renovation Savings, the Ontario program, is open now and has its own rules, including pre-approval before work starts. The federal page does not cover combining the two. When the rebate was announced on October 8, the Prime Minister's release said "Both rebates can be combined with existing provincial programs to bring the cost down even further."

The federal page also says the program details are still being finalized and may change. We will post updates as they are published.
